The two are separate and independent of each other’s movements. They are carried by rails, a single line of which runs along each side of the trench. The excavation is kept in progress in advance. As long as possible the trench diggers throw the earth out by hand, but as the depth of the excavation increases the crane shown in Fig. 1 is brought into play, being used to raise the earth from the trench and carry it to one side. As fast as needful the apparatus is moved forward on the rails by pinch bars. A portable railway is laid at one side of the trench, over which the excavated earth is removed and the pipe brought to the spot where it is to be laid.
