Capt. Keith Wade, a department spokesman, said that the single-story house fire on Presidio Street near the intersection with Harris Avenue was initially called in at 6:52 a.m. by an ambulance crew who spotted the fire and broke in through a locked front door to search for victims without protective equipment while more personnel were on their way.

“Those firefighter medics are to be commended,” Wade said.

The ambulance crew found a woman several feet behind the door and took her out of the home.

In a social media post, department officials said the fire was already under control by 7:15 a.m. Wade said crews were quickly able to get water on the fire and start putting it out.

Two men were found in a back room by fire personnel, Wade said.

Wade said that bars on the windows of the home made exterior entry difficult for the search crew. All three victims were taken to hospitals for treatment. He said the two men died at the hospital, and the woman remains in critical condition.

Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Wade said there is “no reason to believe it’s suspicious or a criminal act.”
