Mar. 3—Two people and a firefighter were injured Wednesday in a house fire believed to have been caused by a space heater, an Elgin Fire Department report said.
Firefighters were called to a home in the 600 block of Lillie Street about 6 p.m. to find flames coming from a first-floor rear porch window and extending to the second floor, the report said.
Crews needed about 25 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which caused more than $80,000 in damage. Residents were home at the time, and two people and firefighter were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the report said.
An investigation is underway, but preliminary information indicates the source could have been a space heater placed too close to combustibles, the report said. The house has been deemed uninhabitable because of the damage.
