Apr. 19—After a deadly fire on Monday, April 18 that killed one man, San Antonio has now surpassed the number of fatal fires that occurred in 2021. The San Antonio Fire Department found the body of a man in an abandoned building that caught fire on the Southside on Monday, the Express-News reported.

SAFD Spokesperson Joe Arrington said the department tracks fires through its fiscal year from October to September of the next year. When it was reported in March that San Antonio was going to surpass the 2021 number of fatal fires, the department was midway through its fiscal year.
Arrington said in March that most of the fatal fires were preventable because of incidents like space heaters or smoking in bed. SAFD Spokesperson Woody Woodward said that statement still stands.
He points people to SAFD’s fire safety website and its SCAN initiative, which informs residents the best way to avoid a fire and increase chances of escaping a fire. SCAN stands for smoke alarms, clear the path of escape, action plan, and neighbors. Neighbors means to identify vulnerable residents that live around who could used help in the event of a fire.
