9/11 Responders with Rare Cancer Denied Coverage

A growing number of first responders who worked at Ground Zero in the rescue and recovery efforts are being diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer, but some are being denied insurance coverage, according to a news report.

CNN reported on the case of former New York Police Officer John Meyers, who provided security at the World Trade Center site in the wake of the9/11 attacks13 years ago.

At age 46, Meyers was diagnosed with stage IV oropharyngeal cancer, but he’s being denied insurance coverage because his cancers were diagnosed too soon after 9/11.

Meyers was diagnosed three years and 10 months after his Ground Zero work, about eight weeks shy of eligibility for cancer coverage or compensation.
