May 3—First responders aren’t always dealing with fires or cats in trees. On Sunday, May 1, the San Antonio Fire Department made a call for three small dogs who were trapped in an underground tunnel.
According to SAFD spokesperson Woody Woodward, engine 17 and medic 17 responded to a call from the 8000 block of Country Village to help three dogs stuck in a drainage tunnel. It’s unclear how the dogs ended up lodged underground or how long they were in the perilous situation, but the emergency call came in just after 6 p.m., Woodward says.
To save the dogs, SAFD borrowed a leash from a neighbor and modified it to make a girth hitch to bring each dog out of the tunnel. Photos shared by the agency show two of the three dogs huddled together in the tunnel, surrounded by trash.
SAFD says animal control responded to the scene and took custody of the pups.
The department shared information about the “great rescue” on the morning of Monday, May 2. Many of the comments asked if the dogs will be available for adoption.
It does not appear that the dogs have been processed for intake to be listed as ready for adoption as of this write, but the Animal Care Services database is refreshed often. The searchable list is available here. Animal Care Services also updates its daily intake photos of adoptable pets on Facebook, which can be found here.
While the three rescued pups are not available for adoption yet, ACS does have many dogs and cats ready to find their furever homes including this Chihuahua named Porkchop.
