May 4—Six cats were killed in a house fire on E. Loudon Avenue Wednesday afternoon, according to the Lexington Fire Department.

The fire was called in at approximately 1:15 p.m. by a neighbor who heard a loud popping noise and subsequently spotted smoke and flames, according to Battalion Chief Kevin Austin. There were heavy fire conditions when firefighters arrived.

The owners of the home weren’t present at the time, but six cats and one dog were inside. Austin said firefighters got all of the animals out but the cats did not survive.

Austin said the dog was doing fine nearly an hour after the fire was reported. There weren’t any other injuries.

It’s unknown what started the fire. Austin said the home was heavily damaged and could be a total loss.

“We’re still waiting to see the total damage, but there was a lot of fire and smoke damage,” Austin said.

E. Loudon Avenue between Magoffin Street and Darley Drive were shut down while firefighters evaluate the scene, according to the Lexington Traffic Management Center.
