A 17-year-old girl died Saturday evening following a house fire in Allendale, officials confirmed to NJ Advance Media on Sunday.

The New Jersey teen, a student at Northern Highlands Regional High School, was home when the fire broke out at about 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, Allendale Police Chief Michael Dillon said.

“The teenager was a resident of the home, but is not being named at this point,” Dillon said in a statement.

Although the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, Dillon noted that preliminarily “the fire appears accidental in nature.”

Allendale Fire Department Chief Robert Policht did not immediately respond when asked how many alarms the fire was and how long it took to extinguish.

Officers responded to the single-family home on Bonnie Way following reports of a house fire shortly after 5 p.m., according to a statement from the Allendale Police Department.

Allendale Ambulance and Valley Paramedics transported the 17-year-old girl to Valley Hospital in Ridgewood where she was ultimately pronounced dead at about 6 p.m., Dillon said. The police chief said the teen’s parents were not at home when the fire broke out — however, they were nearby and went directly to the hospital after being informed of the incident.

The family’s dog and two cats also died in the fire, he added.

Dillon confirmed that Northern Highlands Regional High School will have a delayed opening Monday to provide grief counseling and other resources to the school community following the loss.

“Dr. Scot Beckerman, the Northern Highlands Superintendent, is taking steps to address (the) well-being of students and staff,” Dillon said.

Beckerman did not immediately provide comment on the incident. The Allendale Police Department, Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Bergen County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating the fire.
