WHY NOT CONCRETE?

The Buffalo, N. Y,, News says: “When it is found that in all the great fires, such as in Baltimore, the only buildings that stood in spite of awful blasts of heat, were those constructed of concrete, the case needs no further argument. Buffalo almost alone of cities in the United States is not yet awake to the value of concrete, and does not permit it to be carried above a certain limited number of stories—three in all. Above that there must be something else employed for building. We may hope that during the year the common council will move up and get on the level with other cities, so that there may be no limit to the use of materials for building that are proved over and over again to be not only fireproof, but to be adequate for carrying construction even to twenty stories in height.”

On January 31 Fire Commissioner O’Brien opened bids for the construction of the new firehouse to be built in West One Hundred and Sixty-first street, near Amsterdam avenue, Manhattan, New York, which is to accommodate an engine and truck company. The lowest bid was $74,900, by Frank Sullivan, and the next lowest $76,760.70. by the Schaeffer & Carroll Construction company. The bids were taken under advisement. Bids for the purchase, of 215 horses for the department in the five boroughs were also opened,
