Atkinson’s vision for the department includes maintaining its level of technical ability and its fire prevention programs. He also wants to improve its water rescue program and firefighter education, he said.

Lampart announced his retirement on May 23, capping over 34 years of service to the department. He began his career there as a firefighter at 19 years old and worked his way up to chief. He had said he hoped Atkinson would get the job.
