Water Works Report.

The sixth annual report of the water commissioners, and treasurer of the Leicester, Mass., water supply district, is subemitted for the year ending April t, 1894. The commissioners have drawn on the treasurer during the year 57 orders, amounting to $6,526.57. The items of construction during the year are : Land for standpipe and land damage, $580; service pipe connections, including service mains on Rawson, Water, Spring and High streets, $1,056.89; meters, $118.50 ; incidentals, $121.67. Deduct amount received for service connections and materials sold, $397.59. Net cost of construction during the year, $1,479.77. Add net cost of water works April I, 1893, $59,139.58. Net cost of water works April 1, 1894, $60,619.35. This includes materials purchased, but not used, amounting to $894.27; also uncollected bills for services, amounting to $231.73. Receipts: District appropriation, $1,000; hydrant rental from town, $675; water for sprinkling streets, $88.78; water rates, $1,821.67. Total, $3.585-45Payments: Balance maintenance account last year, $400.85; expenses, $293.79; interest, $2,455.42, leaving a balance of $435.39. Sinking fund: Amount of sinking fund last report, $3,708.92; interest received during the year, $152.16; district appropriation, $1,000. Total, $4,861.08. The above fund is invested as follows: Savings bank deposits, $3,861.08; Leicester water supply district bond, $1,000. Total $4,861.08. Water department: Four per cent, bonds, $61,000; note to Leicester Savings Bank, $500; Total, $61,500. Sinking fund, $4,861.08. Department less sinking fund, $56,638.92. Mains and services: No cast iron mains have been laid during the year; 21,165 feet of service pipes have been laid on Rawson, Water, Spring, Main, High, and Paxton streets; 14 houses are supplied through these pipes; the number of feet of service pipe laid during the year is 1,626.6 feet, of which 539 3 feet is in the public streets and 1,087.3 feet on private estates; 32 taps and 7 meters have been added since our last report. 'I he total length of service pipe now laid is 9,065.1 feet; in the public streets, 3.345.6 feet; on private estates, 5,719.5 feet; number of taps 147; number of meters, 37, The total expenditure during the year for service pipes and connections is $1,056.79. Deduct amount received and due for service and materials sold, $557.99; balance, net cost of services, $498.90. The street mains are now extended sufficiently to supply nearly every house in the district at a moderate cost.

A contract has been made with the town for the rental of 52 hydrants, 25 of which are to be located in Cherry Valley for a term of 30 years, from July 1, 1894, at $25 each, amounting in the aggregate to $1,300, payable January t of each year during said term. The mill owners have promised to take the water into their mills and pay a reasonable sum for the protection which it will give them against fire.
