Water Notes From Crawfordsville.
At Crawfordsville, Ind., with an estimated population of from 8,000 to 10,000, are only 1,417 consumers of water on the books of the local water company. The maximum daily domestic consumption is 1,150,000 gal. For fire protection the ordinance provides six vertical streams from six hydrants through too ft. of 2 1/2-in. hose, with 1-in. nozzle. The reservoir at the pumphouse is 90 ft. in diameter and, when full, has a depth of 13 ft.—an average of 10 ft.—and an average capacity of 477,130 gal. In the pumphouse are installed a small Worthington duplex pump, 2 old Worthingtons—the first only “fair,” the latter poor—maintaining a pressure of 65 to 70 lb. at the pumphouse and about 40 lb. at the fire department gauge. There is also a new, triplex Worthington, of 3,000,000-gal. capacity, which is in excellent condition. If it gets out of order, or when it needs repairs, the other pumps are not sufficiently reliable in case of emergency, and have an aggregate capacity of only 2,000,000 gal. The small Worthington is used only to raise the water from certain collecting wells at the reservoir. The ordinance stipulates for an established capacity of 5,000,000 gal. The three boilers have each a nominal capacity of about 120-horsepower. The safetv-valve is set at 120 lb. As more consumers will certainly be added, especially if the municipality purchases the waterworks system, great improvement must be made and the source of supply (wells and springs) enlarged. J.
