New York State Fire News.
The Buffalo fire department has just had its annual inspection. It was found to be in the best possible condition and Chief B. J. McConnell has every reason to be proud of his men. Every piece of apparatus was hitched up in less than ten seconds. Engine company No. I holds the record with 7 1/2 seconds; truck No. 4 leads the hook and ladder brigade, with eight seconds; chemical No. 6 heads the small apparatus, with five seconds.
The Colonnade, the most substantial and costly building on the Chautauqua Assembly grounds, was burned in an early morning fire. This was the principal business block of the Assembly. The building cost $50,1x10 and was insured for $25,000. The losses it elude the United States Postoffice, with all of the mail, stamps, etc.; Taylor’s printing office, including the entire November edition of The Chautauquan, which was ready for mailing; loss $20,000; insurance $10,000; several stores and two Chautauquan schools. The total loss was $125,000.
