Vacant Buildings Lead to Arson, Undue Demands on Fire Service

In the past few years fires in vacant buildings have taken a position near the top of the list of problems vexing fire departments in large eastern and midwestern cities.

A recent four-alarm fire in Dayton, Ohio, exemplifies the problem. More than 2000 man-hours were spent containing a fire which destroyed a blocklong, five-story manufacturing building—a structure empty and being prepared for demolition. Due to the fortuitous wind direction and much labor by fire fighters, the spectacular fire did little damage to the million-dollar exposures.
