TOPICS OF THE DAY.

华莱士·h·史密斯,纽约州的秘书Firemen’s Association, has prepared a blank for the incorporation of fire companies, an inventory and affidavit, which the law requires to be filed annually in the County Clerk’s office. They will be mailed to any address on receipt of $1.00 per set.

THE investigations made by Fire Marshal Heiskell, of Baltimore, into the doings of the old Board of Fire Commissioners, have provoked a bitter political fight in that city. We published last week the substance of his charges against the Commissioners, which are, substantially, that they purchased hose at $1.35 per foot, when equally good hose can be bought at $ 1 per foot; that they bought much more than the Chief made requisition for; that they purchased electrical and other supplies at exorbitant prices, and in larger quantities than were required. While the local press is discussing the political features of the controversy thus raised, the grand jury is inquiring into the facts of the case, and their action is awaited with interest. We are informed that the citizens of Baltimore generally, outside of a small political faction, are in sympathy with Marshal Heiskell. It is certainly in order for the Fabric Fire Hose Company, of Warwick, N. Y., to explain why it charged Baltimore $1.35 a foot for hose, as the Marshal says it did, when it sells its hose to other cities at $1 or less per foot. We understand that the company claims to be able to show a clean record in the matter, and certainly the taxpayers of Baltimore have a right to know the facts regarding the transaction.
