TOPICS OF THE DAY.
AT the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Kingston Fire Department held a few evening since, the Secretary read reports from all parts of the State which indicated a very large attendance at the annual convention of the State Association, to be held in Kingston, in August. Already the names of many delegates and companies have been sent to Secretary Wallace H. Smith, and every mail brings him letters of inquiry. The Kingston Department is making extensive preparations for the entertainment of their guests, and the event will probably be the grandest ever held in the State. The committee on the competitve drill have secured three elegant prizes, which will soon be on exhibition. The work of the convention will occupy two days; and matters of interest to all Volunteer Firemen, will be discussed by able and practical Firemen, while the display and test of apparatus will be of interest to all citizens as well as Firemen.
FIREMEN are proverbial for their whole-souled generosity, especially towards each other. If one meets with good fortune, his companions rejoice with him, and wish him the most abundant success. But we submit that it is hardly the proper thing when one of them gets married, for a companion to wish him “ many happy returns.” The meaning of such a wish is a little mixed, and the bride might take exception if she thought her husband anticipated many repetitions of his wedding. She would scarely contemplate with satisfaction a long line of prospective brides hanging upon the arm of the one who has just sworn to “ love, honor and protect ” her until death calls one or the other. One of our correspondents indulged in this wish to a happy pair, in his letter to TIIE JOURNAL, but another form of expression will probably convey his sentiments with equal truthfulness and be more satisfactory to those he intended to compliment.
