TOPICS OF THE DAY
WE have received the printed report of the proceedings of the last annual Convention of the National Association of Fire Engineers, held at Cincinnati in September last. The report is none the less interesting because of the delay in its publication. Secretary Mills has done his work in his customary thorough and intelligent manner, and the delay in issuing the report is no fault of his.
THAT well-known and veteran Chief, Thomas B. French, long the Superintendent of the Buffalo Fire Department, has resigned, and Frederick Horning has been appointed to succeed him. Chief French resigned solely because his private business had grown to such dimensions as to re-’ quire his entire attention. His ability as a Chief Engineer is fully recognized, and had he been content to give up his business he would, no doubt, have been at the head of the Department the remainder of his days. But he could not afford to do this, and recognizing the fact that the Service _^needs a Chief who can devote his whole time to it, he sent in his resignation. His successor is reported to be an excellent Fireman and one in whom the Department and citizens have confidence. We trust he will be as successful in keeping down the fire losses of Buffalo in the future as Chief French has been in the past.
