To Protect “Greater Boston.”

The fire chiefs of the Metropolitan district recently met. in the office of Chief Mullen, of Boston, to discuss plans for the better protection of “Greater Boston” from fire. That district, practically comprises the cities and towns that lie within a 40-mile radius. These will co-operate in mutual protection, by "moving up” their apparatus, in case a big fire should break out anywhere within that radius, just as in Boston the apparatus "moves up,” if a fire breaks out that calls for several alarms. It is argued that the town or city that needs assistance will receive it more quickly, if this plan is adopted. To accomplish this effectually, the system must be made obligatory by legislative enactment.
