The Pumper for Small Departments
When fire departments of smaller cities and towns are contemplating the purchase of new fire apparatus, at least one of these should be a machine equipped with hose body, chemical tank and hose, and a pump of sufficient capacity to give one or two good streams under adequate pressure, technically known as the triple combination pumper. Every fire department, even of the smallest village, should have one if not two pumpers in use.
There are many reasons for this. One of the most important is the relief of the distribution system from the strain of added pressure every time a fire occurs. The local accession of pressure due to the action of the pumper saves the department from the necessity of notifying the pumping station of the water works to boost the pumping pressure, with consequent possible delay. The pumper provides an adequate and mobile method of securing good streams in any quarter of the city or town at once, and this is a very important consideration, as every fire fighter knows.
