THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS.
Colored citizens of Chicago are, according to The News, circulating a petition asking Mayor Washburne to make one of the three new fire companies about to be formed a colored organization. Of the companies in Chicago but one is composed of colored men, and that one has a white captain. Last July a petition was presented to the Mayor asking that a colored man be placed at the head of this company, but as there has been apparent reluctance on his honor’s part to making such an appointment, the colored people have decided to ask that one of the new companies be given to them, whereby their claims may be recognized and also an act of justice done to the members of the existing colored company by furnishing them positions in the outlying district when they have become old or partially disabled, instead of dropping them from the service, as has heretofore been the custom. White firemen when they become incapacitated for the most exacting work arc located at outlying stations, where their duties are less onerous, but the colored firemen have never had such an asylum, and as their record for faithful service is said to be unsurpassed by that of any other company, they feel naturally that their claims #re entitled to recognition.

It could be devoted to no worthier object.
