The Gary, Ind., Fire Force
Gary, Ind., was organized as a town in 1906, became a fourth class city in 1910, and now has a population of 40,000. It has an area of 31 square miles. The fire department, of which Wilfrid Grant, formerly chief of the South Bend, Ind., fire dpartment for some years, is chief, consists of 47 men. In the accompanying illustration of the apparatus and members of the department, Mayor R. O. Johnson is seated in the center with Chief Grant on his right, and Assistant Chief Adam Seifert on his left. Chief Grant took command of the department March 15 last when Assistant Chief Seifert also assumed the duties of his position. On May 1 Chief Grant was presented by members of the department with a gold badge and Assistant Seifert with a diamond scarf pin. The department has five motor hose wagons and one horse-drawn ladder truck and will soon purchase a motorchief’s car and a motor hose wagon for a new station. By the end of the year the department will be completely motorized. The loss by fire last year was $88,982, and the value of property involved was $1,637,015.
