It only requires a few of them to create a prejudice where none should exist. Where water works are managed with such care, judgment, and efficiency, is it to be supposed that Denver can produce men more fully equipped to improve, develope, and manage so important a branch of its municipal service, and one so difficult of maintaining its present efficiency than those who are now in charge ? Nearly two-thirds of the water works of the United States are owned by companies. Individual brains, capital, and labor have been employed to construct and manage them ; and it is rare that objection is made to the service they render or the methods they employ to give the people good potable water. The main reason for objecting to the control of water works by companies is the greed for office by the politicians before metioned. This motive seems to be paramount; the good of the commonwealth cry is rot. No tangible excuse can be offered in the case of the Denver Union Water Company for disturbing a system which is not only complete in every detail, but is also one of the best equipped and best managed plants on this continent. It would be criminal to retard the efforts of those who now have charge of these works, and who are every day improving the service for the benefit of the people. It is with pleasure that we are enabled to place ourselves on record as bearing unqualified approval of the Denver system and indorsing the testimony given by so many eminent men in favor of those at present in charge of it; and in doing so we urge upon the people of that city to be careful of any move they may be induced to make—since, to our mind, very little, if anything, can be done in the way of improving the plant, while inestimable injury may be accomplished through placing tin; works in the hands of those who understand nothing beyond drawing their salaries from the municipal purse.
