Chief Bruemmer, of the Tacoma, Wash., fire department, has published a statement of the condition of the department and the work it has done during the last six and a half years. In 1895 all the engines, trucks, and wagons in the department together traveled 1,003 1-2 miles in attending fires. The number of alarms answered was 182, and the total losses by fire amounted to $32,681.88. Insurance on the buildings where the fires occurred amounted to $1,068,360, of which $22,828 represents the sum paid on damages. The running expenses for the twelve months were $45/05490—the lowest in the history of the department. In 1894 the department responded to 122 calls, and loss by fire for the year amounted to $34,608.56. The property where fires started was insured for $700,955, and the insurance paid for damages to the same aggregated $30,807.63. The running expenses for 1894 were $51,575.57. In 1893 the running expenses were $69,409.70. One hundred fires were attended by the department, at which $56,146.49 worth of property was destroyed. The insurance on buildings attacked by the flames during the year amounted to $719,850, of which $47,591.49 was paid over on claims. During the year 1892, 117 alarms called out the firemen. I-osses by fire for the year were in total, $26,422.10. Insurance on buildings in imminent peril of total destruction by the flames aggregated $579,120, of which $18,545.30 was allowed for damages. The running expenses for the year footed up $82,1 29.88 During the year 1891 the department went out to fight the flames 120 times, and the total losses scored against them for fie year amounted to $29,704,34. The insurance on property damaged by fire amounted to $369,150, of which $2,583.68 was paid over to property owners. Running expenses of the fire department for 1891 cost the city $84,950.36, the largest in the history of the city. The expenses for 1890 reached $76,639.19. The total number of alarms responded to was 106, and the losses by fire aggregated $101,937. The total insurance on property scorched or destroyed was $410,300, and claims were nllowed amounting to $59,696. For the last six months of 1889 the running expenses of the new department aggregated $27,769.81; alarms answered, 45; losses by fire $102,580; insurance on property damaged, $91,750; insurance paid, $82,100. During the first six months of the department's existence the least number of calls were answered, the losses by fire were the greatcst.and claims allowed for damages were the largest. The Tacoma fire department now has a full force of 56 officers and men, the running expenses for the year are based on $45,054.90, and the property in use in the department is as follows: Thirty-three horses; 6 steam fire engines; 3 chemical engines; 6 hose wagons: I four-wheel hose carriage3 two-wheel carts; 1 aerial truck; 2 village trucks; 11,850 feet of hose. Seven houses are now occupied by the department,in which are paid men.
