NORTH CAROLINA STATE FIREMEN S ASSOCIATION.

The aggregate amount to be given away in prizes is $1,050. The officers for 1904-05 are as follows: President, Jas. D. McNeill, Fayetteville; secretary, W. C. Von Glahn, Wilmington; first vicepresident, A. H. Boyden, Salisbury: treasurer, T. A, Green, Newbern; second vicepresident, Robt. D. Douglas, Greensboro; statistician. L. H. Lumsden, Raleigh.

The members met at the Blake house, with Vicepresident Aaron Houghton, of Joplin, in the chair, in the unavoidable absence, through illness, of President 1′. llargiss. The informal address of the chairman was replied to on the morning of the second day by M. R. Lively, a lawyer of Webb City. All the events came off according to program and were well contested. The annual parade took place on the morning of the second day, headed by the local fire department. Two prizes of $10 and one of $5 were awarded to the companies Having the best decorated apparatus, the best uniforms and the most men in line. The events in the tournament were of the usual sort and the competition was strenuous. The business meeting was held in the Blake theatre. The various reports showed the association to be in a prosperous condition. 1 he election of officers for the current year terminated as follows: President, John M. Sherwood, of Neosho. Mo.: vicepresident. Dr. Buehl. Bartlesville. I. T.: secretary, P. B. McCarty, St. Louis, Mo.: treasurer, II. Holmes, Pittsburg. Kan. Sixteen directors were also elected. A resolution was passed inviting inventors and manufacturers of fire apparatus to attend future tournaments of the association.

The tenth annual convention of the Northern Central New York Volunteer Firemen’s association met at Lyons, N. Y., and was called to order bv President D. P. Chamberlain After prayer by the Rev. W. G Hull, the address of welcome was delivered by the Rev. W. N. Webbe, who in a few well chosen and earnest words made the visitors feel perfectly at home. The response in behalf of the association was given by W. O. Green, secretary, who cordially thanked the speaker and the people of Lyons for their hearty words of welcome and the evidences of their good will as displayed in the decorations of the village and in their reception of the delegates. William Holloway, in behalf of the fire department. made the address of the convention. He referred to the firemen’s usefulness and their aid in saving property and life. The report of Secretary W. O. Green contained an account of the affairs of the association and showed them to be in a satisfactory condition It now numbers thirty-two companies. The treasurer’s report showed an exceptionally healthy condition of the finances of the association and there is a large balance in the treasury. The election of officers terminated as follows: President, George Goss, of Pittsfield: secretary, W. O. Green (re-elected): treasurer, Abram T. Robinson (re-elected for the eighth time). The vicepresidents are appointed by the county delegations and consist of four members of the association from each county represented. Pittsfield was chosen as the next place of meeting. The parade formed to outsiders the great feature of the gathering. It marched in three divisions under Grand Marshal Blakely. There were over 1,100 firemen in line, with bands and apparatus, an old hand engine and the chemical engines of the Newark, N. Y., tire department attracting great attention. The local department and the visitors were afterwards entertained at dinner, after which all the bands were massed for a march to the air of “Onward Christian Soldiers.’’ A prize drill, a hook and ladder race, and a hose race engaged the attention of the 8,000 spectators, many of whom came from outside towns. The hook and ladder race was won by the Palmyra company; the hose race by the Delands, of Fairport; and the prize for drill by the New York Central hose company, of Newark.

NORTHWESTERN OHIO FIREMEN’S ASSOCIATION.
The twenty-second annual convention of the Northwestern Ohio Firemen’s association was held at Wauseon, with President Palker in the chair. Mayor Biddle delivered the address of welcome in the courthouse, and it was duly replied to bv the president. Ralph Parlette, N. W. Cunningham and W. J. Dempster also addressed the members. In the parade, which beat all former records, were 2,000 firemen, besides over 600 members of bands. A tournament followed, with the following results: Prize for the best drilled company, Liberty Centre company, with Milner & Co., of Toledo, second; Wapakoneta for the largest number (seventy-nine) of men on parade, with the men of Defiance and Spencerville second and third respectively; largest band. Swanton, with thirty pieces; second, Liberty Centre; keeping best step in parade, Milner & Co.’s private brigade, of Toledo, second, Gibsonburg. The election of officers for 1905-06 terminated in the re-election of all those of the preceding year, as follows: President, J. T. Palker: secretary, E. L. Runnison; treasurer, F. C. Gibbs. The convention will meet next year at Defiance.

John J. Cashman, jr., of Brooklyn, New York, has given notice that the fourteenth annual meeting of the Association of Superintendents and Captains of Fire Patrols, Salvage Corps and Protective Departments of the United States and Canada will be held in conjunction with the International Association of Fire Engineers, on Thursday, August 17, 1905, at the fire department headquarters of Duluth, Minn. The meeting will be called at 12 o’clock, noon. Members of the association who may not be able to attend are particularly requested to forward to the secretary some matter for discussion—either a brief description of their method for the protection of property or a description of their department, which might help all in the better management of their own. Malcolm W. Jordan, of Baltimore, Md., is president of the association.
