Retired Supt. Byington Dies
Eugene M. Byington, retired Superintendent of the Repair Shops and high pressure service of the Boston Fire Department, died on February 1 at the age of 87 years.
He was born in Ashburnham, Mass., and served as a call fireman in Boston during the Great Fire of November 9, 1872. He was appointed a permanent fireman the following year and assigned to Engine Company No. 23. In 1874 he was made an engineer and in 1895 was appointed Second Assistant Superintendent of the Repair Shops. In 1906 he was appointed Supervisor of Engines and in 1909 was promoted to Superintendent of Repairs, ranking as a District Chief.
