Oregon Fire Chief to be Elected President of IAFC

Fire Chief Randy R. Bruegman of Clackamas County Fire District #1 in Milwaukie, Oregon will be elected as the President of the International Association of Fire Chiefs on Monday, August 26, 2002, at the Annual International Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.

The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) represents approximately 13,000 fire chiefs throughout North America and internationally. The president’s duties include providing leadership to a 16-member board and 30-member staff located in Fairfax, Virginia, which is in the Washington, DC area and is the primary spokesperson for the Association on matters of national and international interest. The president is routinely called to testify in front of Congressional and Senate hearings and is the representative dignitary for the Association in all major political and international functions (More information can be found at www.iafc.com).

More than 15,000 fire service professionals will gather in Kansas City August 23rd – 26th for the Annual Fire/Rescue International Conference and Exhibition, presented by the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

Bruegman began his career as a volunteer firefighter at Poudre Fire Authority in Fort Collins, Colorado and was later hired in 1979 as a career firefighter. Chief Bruegman worked his way up through the ranks. He served in a variety of positions including: engineer, inspector, lieutenant, captain, and battalion chief. In 1991, Chief Bruegman was hired as fire chief for the City of Campbell, California in 1991 and the Village of Hoffman Estates, Illinois in 1992 before appointment as the fire chief of Clackamas County Fire District #1 (Oregon) in 1996.

A noted author and lecturer on such topics as Leadership and Managing Change in the Fire Service, he is a contributing author of fire service literature including: Fire Attack, The Strategy and Tactics of Initial Company Response, Making a Difference, The Fire Officer Role, Surviving Haz-Mat, Haz-Mat for First Responders, The Volunteer Firefighter, A Breed Apart, and Exceeding Customer Expectations.

He served on the Accreditation Task Force for the International Association of Fire Chiefs for eight years, six as Vice Chairman. Chief Bruegman served as the Chairman of the Commission of Fire Accreditation International for three years, 1997-2000. He holds member status with the Institute of Fire Engineers, is a Chief Fire Officer Designate, and a member of NFPA. He has an associate’s degree in fire science, a bachelor’s degree in business, and a master’s degree in management. He serves on the editorial advisory board for Fire Chief magazine and as a member of the Review Panel for Building and Fire Research for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He was elected as First Vice President of the International Association of Fire Chiefs in August of 2001 and will be installed as President on August 26, 2002.
