May 5—BLOOMINGTON — A man who suffered burns was taken Wednesday evening from the scene of a house fire at 1006 W. Jackson St. in Bloomington.
Bloomington firefighters were called about 6:37 p.m. to a one-story house with a walkout basement at West Jackson Street and Western Avenue.
According to a press release from the Bloomington Fire Department, police arrived on the scene first, reporting visible flames from the rear of the structure. They found one resident in the structure and assisted him out of the building.
Due to the condition of the fire, the alarm was upgraded and the first responding unit made an interior attack before searching the structure.
The resident, who was taken from the scene by ambulance, was the only person reported to be at home at the time, firefighters said. No other injuries were reported.
期间受伤incident were from splashing oil while trying to move a burning pan, police said. The man was stable upon transport, with no further updates available Thursday.
The fire was extinguished by 6:45 p.m. It appeared to have started in and was contained to the kitchen area at the back of the house, but smoke damage was reported throughout the house, officials said.
No damage estimate has been made, but investigators determined the fire to be caused by unattended cooking, which is the leading cause of home fires in America, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
BFD on their Facebook page offered steps to handle cooking fires:
1. Cover the flames with a metal lid or cooking sheet and leave the fire covered until it has cooled.
2. Turn off the heat source.
3. If it’s small and manageable, pour baking soda or salt to smother the fire.
4. As a last resort, spray the fire with a Class B dry chemical fire extinguisher.
Under no circumstance should someone try to extinguish a cooking fire with water or move the pot or pan outside, BFD said.
