NEW HAZARDS IN FIREFIGHTING.

NEW HAZARDS IN FIREFIGHTING.

The Standard of Boston points out that the “experience of fire underwriters during the past few years has effectually checked the growth of the idea beginning to be entertained by some of their number and also by business men, that improved methods of fire protection and the continuous process of replacing the older and flimsily constructed buildings in towns and cities by others of modern slow-burning construction had made the conflagration hazard one no longer seriously to be taken into account. For, in view of the greater concentration of values in the congested districts of cities and the constant introduction of new fire hazards through new means of lighting and heating and new chemical and manufacturing processes, there is reason for the belief that danger of a conflagration is as great to-day as it ever was and much more to be feared, on account of the probability of a much greater property loss. Few business men appreciate the gravity of the situation caused today by the immense property loss caused by the San Francisco fire. Nor do they realise that a similar conflagration is quite possible in other cities, perhaps, in their own city.”
