THE ORIGINAL PLATE OF THE SUN FIRE OFFICE

The illustration on this page is a copy of the original Sun Fire Office plate, taken from a policy dated 1726, sixteen years after the office was founded, and is reproduced here from the pages of the London Fireman. The small hand-engine shown is of a pattern used before the introduction of Newsham’s patent; apparently it consisted of two single-barrel pumps discharging into one outlet fitted on top of an air-vessel; but the picture is not sufficiently clear to enable this to be made out with certainty. The figure on the right is that of the insurance fireman of the day; whose equipment consisted of one of the long hooks in which the firemen of olden times delighted, and a hand-hatchet stuck into a belt of rope. The helmet is of a pattern it would be difficult to match now, and seems to have been founded on a Roman model. On the left the porter evidently expresses the salvage side of the operations.
