MERIDIAN CAN BOND ITSELF.
According to a decision of the Supreme court the city of Meridian may now issue the bonds authorised by the legislature and approved by the people at an election, and build and operate an independent waterworks system of its own, regardless of the franchise that has been granted to the present company. Some time ago an effort was made to purchase the waterworks plant; but the city was not satisfied with the amount placed as purchase money by the commission selected, and no sale was gone into. It was then decided to build and operate an independent waterworks system. The waterworks company secured an injunction against the city to prevent the building and operation of the plant, the case just decided being an appeal on the application for the dissolving of the injunction then granted. The court handed down the decision and held that the granting of the injunction had been improvident, and ordered it dissolved. It is believed that efforts will soon be made towards a purchase, and it is thought a closer arrangement will soon be made by both parties, and that the purchase will be made.
Cullom, Ill., is building a waterworks system. The tower now being erected is of steel. It will be too feet high and surmounted by a hemispherical steel tank of 50,000-gallon capacity—making its total height 129 feet. Till the mains are laid in the spring enough of hose has been secured to afford fire protection as soon as the tower is up, which will be in a few days. The pump is installed and the supply well is flowing.
