MARK TWAIN AS A FIRE ALARM.
Mark Twain’s reappearance in Buffalo recalls some of the old stories about his oddities. One of the neighbors living within easy stone's throw of Mark’s house on Delaware avenue made his acquaintance in this way. One Sunday morning the door-bell rang. The gentleman of the house, being near at hand, opened the door, and was naturally surprised to see Mr. Clemens, whom he knew by sight, standing on the steps in dressinggown and slippers and no hat. Without any apparent agitation and very little interest manifested in tone or manner, the strange caller said in a solemn, drawling way: “ I beg pardon, but your house is on fire.” The house vtfas afire, and in danger, but the flames were suppressed after a good deal of excitement and “ sloshing around ” with water buckets, etc. The incident, as may be supposed, established friendly relations between the two families ; but the older resident will never forget the ludicrous contrast between Mark’s deliberate and dignified announcement and his very unconventional garb and appearance.
