The city is located on Lake Erie at the mouth of Black river and is an important port for the receipt of iron ore and the shipment of coal. Transportation facilities are also afforded by three steam and two electric railways. The most important industries are the steel works, including blast furnaces and steel, rail, skelp and tube mills, and the shipyard. There are also factories for the manufacture of steam shovels, stoves, automobiles, water heaters and toys, an iron foundry and car repair shops.

The gross fire loss for the past 5year period as given in the fire department records, amounted to $203,665: the annual loss ranged, between $11,465 in 1915 and $92,466 in 1919. The average annual number of actual fires was 140, ranging between 78 in 1915 and 160 in 1918, with a loss per fire of $291, a low figure. Based on an average population of 35,175 the average number of fires per 1,000 population was 4 and the average loss per capita was $1.16; both low figures.
