LONDON, ENG., SALVAGE GORPS.

The annual report issued by the London, Eng., Salvage corps shows that, while the number of fires attended during ing the course of last year by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade amounted to 3,635, the number attended by the London Salvage corps was 2,193, and the total hours of service rendered 9,420. These figures show, as compared with the preceding year’s corresponding return, a large increase in the total quantity of services. The corps attended 257 more fires and were employed 1,926 more hours in such services, while the salvage services rendered have risen from 1,117 cases in 1894 to 1,319 in 1895. The extra cost for these services is returned at 650; but the working expenses, owing chiefly to a re-arrangements of the duties of the permanent staff, were reduced by a sum of ,£2,597 Thus the year's transactions show a surplus instead of a deficit, as in the previous year, and the total funds of the corps present an increase of ,£2,792. The only item of expenses showing a serious addition is that of rates and taxes, which is almost wholly due to the increased assessment of the Southwark property, in consequence of the new building re. centiy erected. As compared with previous years, last year was not remarkable for any very serious fires. Those which occurred at Hanbury’s wharf, the South-West India docks and at Tyler's Gateway may be mentioned as instances of extensive damage, where the corps were usefully employed, but the heaviest service, of 2S5 hours, was rendered at a fire of comparatively small dimensions at Hay s wharf, where much valuable property was saved.

纽约Frewsburg,詹姆斯敦附近的一个村庄no fire protection, has naturally fallen a victim to the flames, and now mourns the loss of $36,000 worth of property—insured for only §21,000. The post office, with all its contents, including a considerable amount of mail matter, and six stores, with dwellings attached, were also swept away. Such a sacrifice might easily have been averted by the expenditure of considerably less than the $15,000 lost.
