In forty seconds the crew of hook and ladder company No 16, stationed at fire headquarters, Manhattan, raised its new eighty five foot ladder to the roof of the Seventh regiment armory. It is the largest ladder in use in the department, and will reach to the roof of any flathouse less than eight stories in height The ladder was thoroughly tested by the company. The main ladder rests on a movable steel platform, and the extension is raised by a tackle.
The annual ball of the Brooklyn Volunteer Firemen’s association was held in the Academy of Music on the night of February 5. After a concert the grand march was led by John Courtney, with his daughter, Miss Rose Courtney.
