THE GAMEWELL FIRE ALARM SYSTEM IN NEWBURGH.

A writer in a local newspaper at Newburgh, N. Y., gives an account of the old fire alarm system and that at present in use in that city. He mentions facts particularly to show how difficult it was to bring the city authorities to adopt a modern electrical system, not withstanding that its installation had been advocated for many years past by those responsible for the fire protection of the place.

According to this writer. Chief James Cunningham called attention in 1884 to the fact that at several fires during the year only a few of the members of the department heard the alarm, and strongly urged the council to provide a modern system of fire alarm. No action being taken in the matter, the chief in 1887 again pressed the council to improve the fire alarm service, and so far succeeded that in March 1889 the Gamewell fire alarm system was adopted at a cost of $6,000, which comprised fifteen boxes and the necessary electrical instruments. In that year Chief Cunningham states in his report:
