City officials are restructuring theJersey City(NJ) Fire Department in an effort to reduce overtime costs.
Mayor Steven M. Fulopand Public Safety Director James Shea announced the move today, according to theHudson Reporter(http://bit.ly/1gqQHE1). The reorganization would structure the department into three battalions, which officials claim would put morefirefighterson duty.
The fire department has already used up all its budgeted overtime funds for the year, roughly $2.6 million, due to what the administration called “inefficient staffing,” particularly among the department’s captains. The reorganization will result in additional fire captains being available on all four of the department’s tours, reducing the need for overtime at the captain rank
