The man was transported via Life Star helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital after receiving significant burns.
Meanwhile, two other individuals were transported to Windham Community Memorial Hospital in Willimantic following the fire at 1163 Main St.
Willimantic Fire Department Chief Marc Scrivener said the call for the second- alarm fire came in at 8: 55 a. m.
” We had the water on the fire within a few minutes, but we called it under control at 9: 34,” he said.

Griswold Volunteer Fire Department Lt. Pete Dameron, who works for the Griswold Public Works Department, said he was heading to Willimantic Waste Paper Co. to empty a dumpster from the town of Griswold when he saw a male hanging out a window from upstairs in the building.

A University of Connecticut Fire Department ladder truck was used to get the man out of the dump truck.

Windham Director of Development Matthew Vertefeuille, who is also the town’s public information officer, credited the early responders for rescuing the victim. “It was a very dramatic rescue,” he said.
Dameron coordinated the rescue with Willimantic police officers who were at the scene. “He had burns to both hands,” Dameron said. “It looked like he had inhaled some smoke too.”

Scrivener said Willimantic officers transported two individuals to WCMH.

Scrivener said he called Griswold First Selectman Dana Bennett to express his gratitude. “We’re very grateful for his quick thinking and heroic action,” Scrivener said.

Shepard said he was the second person on scene, noting Willimantic Police Officer Nick Sullivan was first on scene.

He said the fire originated in a second-floor bedroom.
Many victims
There are two apartments in the building as well as a business, Marilyn’s Creations Salon & Spa. Marilyn Soto, who opened the salon in 2013, said she immediately headed to her business after one of her clients saw the fire and called her. “I’m very emotional,” she said.
Soto expressed concern about the situation, noting the business is her only source of income.

Scrivener said staff from Eversource Energy responded and the gas and power in the building were shut off.
