How New York Uses and Cares for 101 Metal Ladders
PART 1
NEW YORK CITY on an experimental basis purchased three 85-foot tractortrailer metal aerials in 1948. The experiment was apparently successful since the original three are still in first-line service and in the interim the department has purchased an additional 98 of the big sticks. Recent specifications call for 100-footers, of which there are 37 now on hand, but the department still has two 144-foot aerials and 62 of the 85-foot models. The remaining 31 truck companies operate wooden aerials, which with a number of wooden spares and reserves, will eventually be replaced.
