THROUGHOUT Southern California, modern research facilities dubbed think factories have become an important part of the economy. Clustered around Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Newport Beach and San Diego, the research facilities of various automotive, electronic and aerospace giants play an important role in the future of the United States. In September one of the newest facilities celebrated its first birthday—the U.S. Forest Fire Laboratory in Riverside.
