FIRE TAKES BIRMINGHAM CITY HALL
Ancient Structure Destroyed in $800,000 fire-— Probably Caused by Defective Wiring—Cupola Collapses, Endangering Firemen —Burnings of the Week
DEFECTIVE wiring is believed to have been the cause of the worst fire in a decade that Birmingham, Ala., has suffered, when the old City Hall was destroyed with a loss approximating $800,000. The blaze started in the attic of the building, directly over the laboratory at 12:15 p. m., the alarm being turned in by a health department employee, who saw smoke pouring from the upper window. Chief J. L. Akin, who had been attending a meeting of the city commission in the building, immediately took charge of the fire-fighting, and turned in a general alarm, summoning all the apparatus of the city, including companies from Bessemer and Enslcy, suburbs of Birmingham.
