the buggy of Battalion Fire Chief Michael Lriel. of Brooklyn, New York while hastening to a small, arly morning fire, collided with a baker’s wagon. He was thrown out and received injuries which may prove fatal. It is said his skull, a leg and an arm were fractured, and that he was seriously injured internally. His driver was also thrown out and dragged bv the frightened horse the full length of a block. He was badly hurt, small loss.

At Knoxville, Tenn., an early morning fire destroyed the four-story clothing manufactory of Suttle & Beeler, on Commerce avenue, between Gay and State streets, the five-story building occupied by Broyles, McClelan & Lackey, wholesale agricultural implement, vehicle and seed house, and the International Harvester Co.’s fivestory wholsesale implement and vehicle store. A stiff gale of wind made the work of the fire department especially difficult; hut the department succeeded in preventing the spread of the fire to between 16,000 and 17,ocx) bales which were on the ground nearby.

At Bonesteel, S. Dak., two children lost their lives, and many square miles of farm land have been ravaged as a result of a prairie fire raging for two days, threatening for a time to attack Aberdeen, S. Dak., and the newly opened Rosebud Indian reservation lands. Many cattle perished, and a score of farm buildings were burned, in spite of 300 farmers, who kept fighting the flames night and day. A number of schoolhouses are reported burned. John L. Britting’s farm was devastated, and his young daughters were lost. They were at school when the fire swept the region, and were never seen again. Railroad graders at Forbes to the number of 250 fought the fire all night, hut could not hold it. Eighteen men saved Aberdeen by ploughing a fire break four miles long north of the town.
