FIRE LOSS FOR FEBRUARY

The fire loss for February amounted to $8,676,750—less than in the corresponding month in 1896 or 1895, in which the damage done by fire came to a total of $12,360,200 and $9,730,100 respectively. So far this year the fire loss has amounted to $20,726,450;in 1896 it was $20,770,100, and in 1895, $24,255,800. East February had 180 fires, at which over $10,000 worth of property was destroyed, as follows:

Of the February fires, the most notable were these: Harrisburg, Pa., State capitol building, $750,000; Salt Lake City, Utah, business block, $360,000; Ottawa, Ont., Parliament building, $150,000; Toledo, Ohio, grain elevator. $300,000; Grand Forks. N. Dak., various, $225,000; Fort Wayne, Ind., several stores, $150,000.
