FIRE AND WATER
REPORT has it that politicians are again at work in the fire department of Minneapolis, Minn., and that the head of Chief Stetson is in danger. It would be interesting to know what these factionaries expect will be the result to Minneapolis from this eveasting jack-in-thebox system of letting first one man and then another pop up as chief, only to be superseded at a short interval by the latest created assistant chief. From present appearances it would seem as if the latter’s office were created simply as a means of ousting the chief in favor of his subordinate, who, in his turn, will do the disappearing act to make way for the man who was made assistant in his place. Of course, all this militates against Minneapolis having the well-organized and well-disciplined fire department called for by a city of such importance and with such heavy risks at stake. The political Gallios of the day, however, care for none of these things.
