Filtration Called For at Detroit
During April there were thirteen fatal cases of typhoid fever, notwithstanding the fact that the water in Detroit, Mich., has been treated with five pounds of hypochlorite of lime to 1,000,000 gallons of water. That such treatment was insufficient to purlfy the water sufficiently was proved from the fact that during May of this year there were over fifty deaths from typhoid, as against twenty-four in the first five months of 1912. Dr Kiefer, the city’s health officer, showed that nine out of the thirteen fatal eases of typhoid in April last had occurred after the treating of the water had begun, He, therefore, suggested that the health commissioners should pass a resolution asking the water commissioners to install a hypochlorite plant of sufficient ca parity to a better and more complete treatment of the water. The health commissioners. however, for reasons best known to themselves, de cided to defer action.
The Alpena, Mich., firemen have been ordered to turn out early every morning to flush all the paved streets of the city. They object stro_____gly to the order, which has been in force since June 1.
