DISASTROUS MEXICAN FLOOD.
On June 30 and July I Guanajuato, Mexico, was swept by a disastrous flood, the result of a cloudburst, which did damage to the amount of over $1,000,000 and caused over 200 persons to lose their lives, some in a church, whose walls fell. In it the people were praying to be spared from the fury of the water. A violent storm began on the night of June 30, and in a short time the flood overwhelmed the lower and business streets of the city. Guanajuato, owing to its situation in a great ravine or gorge, has been subjected to tloods sweeping down from the mountains, and much loss of life has been recorded, hut the recent storm was unprecedented in violence. The roar of wind and rain was continuous, and, as the flood rose, the foundations of solidly built masonry and the houses were undermined. The violence of the storm and the further rise of the water ceased on the afternoon of July 1. The famous La Olla dam, for whose safety great fears had been entertained, withstood the rush of water.
