CROTON WATER GERMS.

CROTON WATER GERMS.

The germ experts of the department of water supply, gas and electricity of New York city have at last found out what it is that makes the Croton water taste grassy or fishy. There are two causes for this very peculiar flavor: 1. Anabena; 2. aphanizonemon The anabena is a well-known microscopic organism which, when properly magnified. looks not unlike a hungry cockroach. The aphamzonemon is an equally well-known microscopic organism, which bears a resemblance, it is said at the office of the aqueduct board, to the celebrated Mexican guyascutus. Both organisms, according to a report of Biologist G, C. Whipple, are found m nearly all of the storage reservoirs, but take especial delight in locating themselves in the new reservoirs, where they do not belong. They do not injure the water from a sanitary standpoint, merely giving it a delicate, aromatic, grassy or fishy taste.
