Birth and Death of a Fire Department
Arlanza, Calif.—organized 1948, Annexed 1962
A HAND-DRAWN hose cart which carried 750 feet of 2 1/2-inch hose, and a 1920 pumper were all that the volunteers of the Arlanza Fire Department had for equipment on the date of their organization, August 3, 1948. A mushrooming subdivision, Arlanza, Calif., was the original site of the military installation, Camp Anza, just outside the city limits of Riverside. The camp had been deactivated in 1947, and developed later in the same year by the Anza Realty Company. It was zoned for residential, commercial and industrial occupancy. Early residents realized the need for fire protection, and at a meeting that was held on the above date, a volunteer fire department was organized.
