'Bicycling' for Health

10他后art cases in the Syracuse, N.Y., Fire Department in a year, Chief Thomas F. Hanlon, 3rd, instituted an exercise program centered on the purchase of nine motorized bicycling machines for use at eight fire stations. The machines include electronic personal exercise planners so each user can monitor his program.

“It is a solid answer to fighting heart attacks,” said Hanlon. “We couldn’t install expensive gyms and equipment . . . To get true conditioning we found that the person must truly work hard for a concentrated period. With the motorized Exercycle, the user has to work rigorously for 15 minutes and is exercised passively for another 10 minutes in warming up and cooling down periods.”
