$75,000,000 FOR WATERWORKS.
River improvements versus appropriations for the navy will be a big issue in the next session of Congress. Representative Theodore E. Burton of Ohio, chairman of the house committee on rivers and harbors, has decided to demand of the next Congress $75,000,000 for the improvement of national harbors and waterways, a larger sum than has ever been appropriated for the purpose in one bill. The amount most closely approaching it was $66,000,000 carried in the bill passed in 1896. His plan is to devise a comprehensive scheme for the improvement of all the great waterways. It will include all sections of the country where there are navigable rivers, and by this means it is believed representatives from all the populous States will be enlisted in support of the plans, especially among the Southern Democrats who are interested in the improvement of the Mississippi river.
The total cost of the new waterworks systemfor Winfield, Kan., will be $71,646.
