A Middletown firefighter who was seriously injured in a fatal fire has made substantial and “impressive” progress a month later, according to his department.
Shawn Menear was trapped for up to 45 minutes when thesecond floor of a Royalton homecollapsed on Jan. 23.He suffered second and third-degree burnsand other injuries that has kept him hospitalized at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.
The resident of the home,William “Bill” Hardy, died in the fire.
Earlier in February, Menear was able towalk on his own for the first time, according to the Middletown Fire Department.

Menear has undergone multiple operations, but still has at least one left, according to the department. His medical team is “very satisfied” with Menear’s healing, and the functionality of his right leg has “greatly increased.”
The department said Menear is now able to “lift himself and take steps with ease.”

“The amount of support provided thus far has been substantial, yet donations are still being accepted and multiple events are planned for the near future,” the department wrote.
